Skin isn't subtle about this. It just uses signals we've been taught to ignore, or to answer with another product.
1. Tightness that doesn't let go
A good cleanse leaves skin clean. It shouldn't leave it stretched. If the tightness is still there ten minutes later, the cleanser took more than it came for.
2. Stinging on contact
Not burning, not a rash. A small nip when a serum goes on, from something that never used to nip. There's a version of this used as an actual clinical test, because a weakened surface lets irritants reach the nerve endings underneath.

AI-crafted imagery. Fictional model.
3. Redness that outstays its welcome
Everyone flushes. Cold air, a hot shower, a glass of wine. The question is how long it takes to fade. When it hangs around for hours, the surface is having trouble settling itself.
4. Everything is suddenly a problem
New reactivity is the clearest of the five. A cleanser you've used for a year starts to sting. Sunscreen feels different on. The products haven't changed, so something else has. Not sure whether this is your barrier or plain dryness? Here's how to tell them apart.
5. It doesn't quite look like itself
Skin can look less even, a bit flat. We've put this last on purpose. It's an impression rather than a measurable sign, and plenty of things cause it, from a short night to a long winter. Take it as a hint, not a diagnosis.
So what do you do
Take things away. None of these five is asking for a stronger product. Park the acids and the retinoid, keep cleansing gentle, and give it a week or two, which is roughly how long a disrupted barrier takes to settle. A gentle reset is the shape of what comes next.
