Anyone can print "clean" on a label. There's no legal definition of the word and nobody checks it. COSMOS is different, because somebody else does the checking.
Who actually runs it
COSMOS is an international standard for organic and natural cosmetics, managed by a non-profit association based in Brussels. Products are certified by independent, accredited bodies that audit the formula, the sourcing, and the factory on site. It's not a self-declaration. That's the entire point of it.
Natural and Organic are two different signatures
Both require a product to meet the whole standard. Only one of them sets a minimum for organic content.
COSMOS NATURAL certifies the natural origin of the formula and compliance with everything else. It asks for no minimum organic content. COSMOS ORGANIC adds that requirement: at least 95% of the plant ingredients that are only physically processed, meaning pressed or chopped or blended rather than chemically altered, must be organically farmed. On top of that, at least 20% of the finished product must be organic, or 10% if the product rinses off.
Both live in our range. The Gentle Cleanser, Daily Calm Moisturizer and Quiet Hours Facial Oil are COSMOS ORGANIC. The Daily Balance Essence and Quiet Glow Serum are COSMOS NATURAL. That's why we write COSMOS-certified when we mean all five, and name the tier when we mean one.
20% of a finished product sounds modest until you remember that water can never be organic.

What gets checked
Where the ingredients come from and how they were farmed. Which ingredients are permitted at all, and which processes may be used to make them. Packaging, waste, and energy. Genetically modified material isn't allowed, nor is irradiation, nor animal testing. The organic percentage has to be printed on the pack, and what you say about it may not mislead.
Alongside COSMOS, every OMTILO product is vegan, cruelty-free, made in the EU, and packaged to be recyclable.
What it doesn't mean
It isn't a safety certificate. Cosmetic safety in the EU is governed separately, by law, and every product on the market has to satisfy it before it can be sold. COSMOS says nothing about whether a product works, whether it will suit your skin, or whether it's hypoallergenic.
It also doesn't mean "chemical-free", which is a phrase we would rather not use at all. Water is a chemical. The standard permits a defined list of processed and nature-identical ingredients, mostly preservatives, because the alternative is a product that spoils in your bathroom.
So what does it tell you
That an independent body looked at the formula, the sourcing, and the packaging, and put its name to the result. Not that the product is magic. Your own ingredient list still matters more than any logo, so read it and patch-test. Our facial oil, for one, contains sweet almond oil.
