The ritual

The order that matters: how to layer your routine

OMTILO skincare products laid out on linen showing the routine order, on a warm beige background

Skincare gets treated like a rulebook, with a strict order you are not allowed to break. It is simpler than that.

The one rule

After cleansing, go from thinnest to thickest. That is it. In practice, that looks like:

cleanse → a hydrating mist → serum → moisturizer → oil (last)

Why thinnest to thickest

Thin, watery textures sink in fastest, so they go first. Thicker creams and oils sit on top and help hold everything in. If you put a rich cream on before a watery serum, the serum has a harder time getting through. Lightest first, richest last, and each step has a better chance of doing its job.

Why oil goes last

A facial oil seals the routine. Very little gets through an oil, so nothing useful should go on top of it. A few warm drops, pressed in as the final step. (Our facial oil contains sweet almond oil, a tree nut, so skip it if you have a nut allergy.)

You do not need every step, every day

Mornings can be short: cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen. The evening is where you can do a little more if you feel like it. Skipping a step is not "doing it wrong." It is just building the routine that fits your skin. Not sure whether you need an essence? We covered that too.

The short version

Cleanse, then thinnest to thickest, oil last. That is the whole thing. No chart required.
